Participation of Dutch actors in Horizon 2020

How successful were Dutch participants in Horizon 2020, the European R&D funding programme? IDEA Consult mapped this out for AWTI (Advisory Council for Science, Technology and Innovation)with the aim of optimising the impact of STI policy.

IDEA Consult is mapping the participation of Dutch actors in Horizon 2020, the European framework programme for research and development. We are doing this on behalf of the Advisory Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (AWTI) which, based on our study, will advise the Dutch government and parliament. Through an in-depth analysis of the number of participations, the number of projects won and the funds raised by H2020, we will provide insight into the success of Dutch actors.

These analyses will be put in a comparative perspective with 10 selected benchmark regions, including Flanders and the best performing regions in the EU Regional Innovation Scoreboard. We will also use a network analysis to map out with which countries Dutch actors primarily cooperate. Depending on the availability of data, we will also investigate whether there are spillover or linkage effects between participation in Horizon 2020 and other regional EU funds (such as ERDF) or national STI schemes.

This study follows the same methodology as a similar analysis carried out for the Walloon government in 2021.
